Summ review: does the Koinly rival earn its rebrand on DeFi and multi-country tax?
Summ, the software formerly known as Crypto Tax Calculator, promises to read DeFi contracts directly instead of relying on protocol integrations. We funded wallets across three chains, ran a Koinly-style comparison, and checked what the $49 to $249 plans actually unlock.
Our verdict
Summ reads DeFi contract events instead of waiting for protocol-specific integrations, which makes it more resilient than Koinly on obscure vaults and multi-hop swaps, and its country coverage is genuinely wide. The free tier only lets you look, not file, and the cumulative 10,000-transaction cap punishes long-time traders who Koinly would reset every tax year.
Best for: Multi-chain DeFi users filing outside the largest markets
Crypto Tax Calculator renamed itself Summ in October 2025. We went in expecting a paint job. What we found was a genuine bet that reading blockchains directly beats chasing every DeFi protocol's API one integration at a time.
Why on-chain-native matters for DeFi
Most tax software keeps a list of supported protocols and breaks the moment you touch something new. Summ instead parses the contract events themselves: a liquidity pool deposit, a multi-hop swap through three routers, a vault re-stake, a cross-chain bridge. It does not need to know your specific DeFi app by name to classify the transaction correctly.
We tested this on an Arbitrum vault strategy and a Solana liquid-staking position that Koinly's support forum lists as a known gap. Summ classified both without manual edits. That is the core promise of the rebrand, and on our test wallets it held up.
The practical upside is fewer support tickets during filing season. A protocol-list tool leaves you stuck explaining an unrecognized contract to a support queue in April. A contract-reading tool at least attempts a classification you can correct, rather than a blank row you have to fill in from scratch.
Pricing: three published tiers, and a catch on the free plan
Summ lists three paid tiers on its pricing page: $49, $99 and $249 per tax year, scaling by transaction volume. You can connect every wallet and exchange, import your full history, and preview your gains for free. What you cannot do on the free plan is download a report, which means the free tier is a preview tool, not a filing tool.
