Trezor Safe 7 review: does Bluetooth and TROPIC01 justify $249?
We set up a Trezor Safe 7, signed transactions over Bluetooth and by cable, and compared its auditable secure chip and 2.5-inch screen against the cheaper Safe 5 and Safe 3 in the same lineup.
Our verdict
The Safe 7 earns its price with two genuine firsts: TROPIC01 is the first auditable secure element in a consumer wallet, and Bluetooth signing over an encrypted, open-source protocol actually works without feeling like a compromise. Buy it for the security architecture and the screen, not for Bluetooth alone, since a cabled Safe 5 secures funds just as well for $120 less.

SatoshiLabs sells three Trezor models at once, so the Safe 7 has to justify itself against its own siblings, not just against Ledger. We set one up, moved a small BTC balance onto it, signed transactions both by cable and over Bluetooth, and weighed whether the $249 price earns its place above the Safe 5.
A secure chip you can actually check
The headline feature is TROPIC01, a secure element built by Tropic Square, a SatoshiLabs subsidiary, and marketed as the first auditable secure chip in a consumer hardware wallet. Every prior secure element on the market, including the one in the Safe 5, is a closed black box: the manufacturer asks you to trust its certification and nothing else. TROPIC01 publishes its design files down to transistor-level logic, so independent researchers can verify what the chip actually does instead of taking a datasheet on faith.
The Safe 7 pairs TROPIC01 with a second, more conventional EAL6+ certified element from Optiga and an STM32U5 microcontroller that coordinates between them. Three components from three separate vendors means an attacker needs to compromise more than one supply chain at once, not just one part number.
The screen makes the signing flow legible
Reading a transaction correctly before approving it is the entire point of a hardware wallet's screen, and this is where the Safe 7's extra cost shows up most directly.
